Cuties & Butterball

Interesting title, right?! Two items I'm interested in buying.  There's a coupon for Cuties and a coupon for Butterball Ground Turkey. What do these 2 things have in common? Nothing except I have never seen them at our stores locally!

Cuties are two varieties of mandarins: Clementine mandarins and Murcott mandarins. I'd love to make use of this coupon because my kiddos LOVE clementines. It's tasty and easy for them to peel. Comparing Produce Prices & Quality

I've mentioned previously that I have not been paying much attention to produce prices. It's an area I need improvement. I talked about this in my Going Bananas post. Anyways, one of our readers sent me a message saying Wegmans usually has some of the best produce prices. Also, their selection is often better. I did discover this specifically with bananas (again reference my Going Bananas post) Thanks Jacque for the tip!

I'd love to know what everyone else thinks? Where's the best place to buy produce in regards to price, quality, both? Giant, Wegmans, Weis, Walmart, a farmer's market? I'm sure other readers would love to know.

Going Local: Adventures at a Fruit Farm and some FREE Pie & Cider

I started out this morning thinking about what my family should do for the day. I knew about Auntie Anne's Free Pretzel Day. I pondered what else?...then recalled my kids asking me several times this past week "When are we going to the fruit farm?...I really want some apples" By "fruit farm" they meant Way Fruit Farm. Hmm, free pretzels or apples. How could I say no to the healthy choice my kids were excited about?! I decided to check my email remembering I got a message yesterday from Way Fruit Farm. I wanted to see what kinds of apples they had available. Also, the email mentioned "if you come check out our new fireplace in the cafe this weekend and bring a copy of this email, you'll receive a free slice of pie and cup of cider to enjoy by the fire." This part of the email was an unexpected bonus!

So, off we went to the "fruit farm."  My kids love this place. It's almost like an adventure for them. Maybe, it's seeing all the apples. One of my daughters really wanted peaches. Of course, peaches are not in season. Not to worry, she got it in the form of some FREE pie.

The email offer stated the limit was 2 per group. But, the people at Way Fruit Farm were so kind and insisted on giving all of us - my 3 kids, my husband, and myself - each a piece of free pie.  So we got 3 apples pies, 1 walnut apple pie, and 1 peach pie. YUM! The kids got cold apple cider and us grown ups got hot cider. WOW, we enjoyed this! The cafe is wonderful and their apple cider is the best!!!

We left there buying loads of apples and also some apple cider. We couldn't resist Way Fruit Farm's own delicious apple cider!

Going Bananas: Yes, this is a savings & coupon related post!

I was in search of 30 ripe bananas two days ago. It was not an easy task at first. I needed to buy bananas for my kids’ preschool snack. I first went to Giant. Not much luck. Most were green. I walked out of there with only 8 nice yellow bananas…22 more to go. Now, I don’t normally pay attention to produce prices. This is an area I need improvement to find deals. Plus, I would like to eventually buy more produce from the local farmer’s market. Giant’s price for Bananas – 0.49/lb. I decided to check out Walmart next. The selection was worse there. All green, but found out price was a bit lower – 0.47/lb. I finally went to Wegmans with my twins. They must have been my good luck charm because not only did Wegmans have loads of nice yellow bananas but they were much cheaper – 0.39/lb!!!

Let’s summarize - Giant 0.49/lb…Walmart 0.47/lb…Wegmans 0.39/lb!!! Wegmans Wins! Funny how I discovered this price difference – not because I was looking for it but because I needed 30 bananas.

The preschool ended up having leftover bananas. I took them home. I'll make use of them by making Mini Banana Oat Muffins. Here are some ingredients where I have saved money.

It is rare to have a produce coupon available online.  Right now, there is a coupon for Dole Salad bags at Coupons.com. Enter the zipcode 77477 or 79922.


The coupon states “Save .75 on any One (1) DOLE Blend, Distinctively Dole Salad, or Complete Salad Kit.” I printed the coupon this morning and the expiration date is 2/28/10. Click HERE for the coupon.

Giant has these on sale BOGO (Buy One Get One) unti 2/20. Price is $3.69.

Buy 2 Dole Salads $3.69 = $3.69 (since it’s BOGO)
Use 1st .75 coupon = 1.50 (coupon doubles)
Use 2nd .75 coupon = .75 (2nd coupon won’t double)
You Pay = $1.44 for 2 bags
Final Cost = $.72/bag!

NOTE: Not 100% sure they’ll allow you to use two .75 coupons because it is BOGO. I have done it before but have not recently, so be prepared. If they will only allow one:

Buy 2 Dole Salads $3.69 = $3.69 (BOGO)
Use one .75 coupon = 1.50 (coupon doubles)
You Pay = $2.19 for 2 bags
Final Cost = $1.10/bag!
